A bakery in Selangor came to us in August wanting a house-shaped box for their Chinese New Year cookie sets. They had already been quoted for a glued rigid version — a good box, but the freight quote came back higher than the boxes themselves. We re-cut it as a hand-fold: same pitched roof, same printed panels, but it ships flat and locks together at their packing table. Their landed cost came down by roughly a third.
That is what this box is. A house-shaped gift box that folds up by hand, carries cookies or candy, and needs no glue or tape to hold its shape.
How this box locks together without glue
The walls and the roof close with die-cut tabs and slots. Fold the four walls up, push the side tabs into their slots, then bring the two roof panels over and seat their tabs. No glue, no tape, no staples, and nothing to wait on while adhesive sets. This is another version that uses glue.
Three things that changes for you:
– You assemble at your own table, when the orders come in, instead of paying to have boxes built and then shipped empty.
– The box ships flat. Customers regularly fit about three times as many units into a container compared with the same box assembled — and that, more than the unit price, is where the saving usually shows up.
– Nothing is glued, so nothing is permanent. If a run does not sell out, the leftovers fold back down flat and store for next season instead of stacking up as empty boxes.
What goes inside
The standard size is 17.3 × 15.5 × 17.8 cm, and it is the one we sell most of. It takes a tray of cookies, a bag of nougat, a small chocolate selection or a mixed sweet set without leaving much dead air above the contents.
What customers actually put in it, roughly in order of how often we see it:
– Iced sugar cookies or biscuits — four to eight, depending on how thick they are
– Nougat and soft candy, loose in a tray or individually wrapped
– Small chocolate bars or truffles in a moulded insert
– Festive mixes, a few of each laid out in a divider
If what you are packing is loose or oily, ask about an insert. A paperboard divider stops pieces knocking into each other in transit, and a food-grade liner is worth the small extra cost for anything with butter in it. Tell us what you are packing and we will confirm the right stock. Printing and finishes
Every outside surface is printable. The two roof panels, the four walls, the door and window graphics — all of it is printed flat, before die-cutting, so the artwork lines up with the shape instead of being wrapped onto a finished box afterwards.
Finishes we run most often on this box:
1:Full-colour CMYK as standard, or Pantone spot colours where you need an exact brand match
2:Hot foil in gold or silver along the roof edge, around the door, or on a logo — the most common choice for festive runs
3:Embossing or debossing if you want the house outline raised
4:Matte or gloss lamination, chosen mainly for durability rather than looks
Send vector artwork if you can. Photographs and bitmaps work fine, but fine lines — the roof outline, small text on the door — need to be at least 0.3 mm wide to survive both printing and die-cutting. If you have not worked from a cutting file before, [what is a dieline](https://love-packaging.com/what-is-a-dieline/) explains the format.
Sizes and board options
17.3 × 15.5 × 17.8 cm is our standard, and the cutting die for it already exists, so there is no tooling charge on that size. Other sizes are straightforward too — we cut a new die, which is a one-off cost, and it usually pays for itself above roughly 3,000 pieces.
Board comes in at 2.0 mm as standard. That is stiff enough that the roof holds its crease and the walls do not bow when the box is full. If you want a more premium feel, we can run the same structure in card instead: it prints a little sharper and feels smoother in the hand, at a higher unit cost. Both sit within the range covered by our [rigid boxes](https://love-packaging.com/custom-rigid-boxes/) and [folding cartons](https://love-packaging.com/custom-folding-boxes-folding-box-manufacturer/).

FAQ
1:Does the box need glue or tape to assemble?
No. Die-cut tabs and slots hold the walls and roof in place. It goes together by hand in about ten to twenty seconds once your packer has done a few — the first one always takes longer.
2:What is the MOQ?
500 pieces per design. Can only be made in one color or one size.
3:Can I get a different size?
Yes. We cut a new die for any size you need. There is a one-off tooling cost, and the standard 17.3 × 15.5 × 17.8 cm has no tooling charge because the die already exists.
4:Is the board safe for food?
We use food-grade stock for food runs. Tell us what you are packing — loose, oily, individually wrapped — and we will confirm the right board and whether you need a liner or insert.
5:How much does flat packing actually save?
It depends on the route and the order size, but customers typically fit around three times as many flat units in a container compared with assembled boxes. Ask us for a freight comparison against your usual quantity.
6:Can I reuse a die from a previous order?
Yes, if the tooling was ours. We keep cutting dies on file, so a repeat run skips the tooling charge entirely.
