Last autumn a Singapore corporate-gift buyer showed us a tin gift box she liked: gold lattice doors, a carry handle, the kind you see holding mooncakes in a hotel lobby. The metal version quoted at three times her budget once tooling and air freight were added. We built her this instead – the same cabinet-door look, done in rigid greyboard. Same visual weight on a reception desk, about a third of the shipping cost.
What this box is made of
The walls are 2.0 mm greyboard wrapped in coated art paper, which is the standard construction for a rigid gift box. The difference is the front. Instead of a solid printed panel, the double doors are laser-cut into a lattice pattern, so guests can see the contents through the openings before the box is even opened. A gold carry handle sits on top.
Cutting that pattern in paperboard rather than tin is what keeps this box practical. No metal tooling fee. No sharp edges. A filled box weighs well under half a kilo, which matters when you are shipping a couple of thousand units to a hotel by air.
Two sizes, and how to choose
There are two stock shapes, and they read differently on a counter:
– Flat: 32.5 x 9 x 17 cm. Sits wide, holds four mooncakes or a row of pastry boxes side by side. This one reads as a hamper.
– Tall: 29.5 x 9 x 30.5 cm. Stands up, takes up less counter space, and stacks well if you are building a gift tower. This one reads as a display piece.
Both take the same die-cut paper tray inside. If your gift is wide and flat – mooncakes, cookies, a boxed tea set – go flat. If it is tall or you want the box to be the display itself, go tall. Many hotels order both and let the counter staff choose on the day.
What hotels and corporates put inside
The trays in the photos hold mooncakes, but that is not the only use we ship. Common fillings:
– Mooncake sets and pastry gift boxes (see our [custom mooncake packaging] page for tray layouts)
– Tea tins or coffee sachets with a small card
– Hotel amenities: towels, slippers, a welcome note in one presentable box
– Corporate gifts where the box itself is part of the present, not just wrapping
The standard insert is a die-cut greyboard tray, which is included. For premium sets we also make EVA inserts with flocking or a satin base – worth it when the gift sits in the box for weeks rather than days. Our [rigid box] page shows the insert options in more detail.
Your logo on the box
Three finishes work on this construction:
– Hot foil stamping – gold and silver are the most common. Best for a clean mark, a monogram, a hotel crest.
– Screen printing – when your logo has multiple colours or fine detail that foil cannot hold.
– Blind emboss – no colour, just the mark pressed into the door panel. Quiet, expensive-looking.
The logo usually goes on the front door panel or on a small plate above the handle. Send the artwork as a vector file (AI, EPS or PDF) and we will confirm the minimum line width before printing.
MOQ, samples and lead time
Minimum order is 500 pcs per design, using the existing cutting dies. If you need a new size or a different lattice pattern, the new die is quoted separately – most clients skip this and use the stock shapes.
Plain samples ship in about a week. Before bulk production you get a digital print proof, and QC photos at packing. Production runs 15 to 25 days depending on quantity, then 7 to 12 days door to door from our Wenzhou factory to Singapore, by sea or air – your call, we quote both.
